Leap into Spring

Yesterday was quite a crazy day here in Chicago. I woke up to the sun shining so bright in my room and it was so warm in my apartment. I walked through the kitchen and couldn't believe how hot it was, something was off. I checked the weather and it was already 54º at 8am!! I immediately turned off the heat and opened a window. I was so ecstatic, Spring!!

I worked on Dethrose Vintage listings for a bit and then went to brunch with Kat. It was just so gorgeous out, we walked around soaking up the sun. Unfortunately if you live in Chicago you know the weather can change at the drop of a hat. One minute I was leaving my coat in the car and the next it's raining and dropped 25º with in 30 min. No joke, bipolar Chicago decided to turn right back into winter. Hey, at least I got to enjoy it for about 5 hours.

I am so grateful to live in a city I love and be surrounded by loving, inspiring, & talented friends. Merl is one amazing lady that I have gotten to know over the past few months and I have decided she is one of my favorite people. While doing my daily blog read, I came across the new Spring/Summer 2012 collection from Lena Hoschek at Quincy's blog. I am not a huge follower of designers, I follow the same handful for inspiration such as; Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Miu Miu, Chloe, Chanel, Dior and for the past year and half, Lena Hoschek. I subscribe to 10 fashion magazines for a 3 main reasons;

1) To keep up with what people will be shopping for, 2) Photography and 3) Inspiration.

I hope to one be enjoying a beautiful atmosphere in a dreamy dress just like these ladies one day!

Fantastically Bazaar...

This weekend was the February Vintage Bazaar and not to mention, one of the best weekends I have had in a while! I kicked off this weekend with hanging out with friends, new and old. Dancing, vintage shopping, and so much laughter. Those are the best weekends am I right?!

The Vintage Bazaar was a great success as usual. Full of fantastic vendors, food, and music provided by Chirp Radio. I look forward to the Bazaar every time, not only for the shopping but I get to meet so many awesome people! My favorite is when readers of the blog, past etsy customers or facebook followers come and shop and I can meet them in person! So rewarding.

30s & 40s Obsession and A Tiny Shop Update!

Like I had brought up in my last couple posts, I recently had the pleasure to visit a home with 3 decades of vintage clothing. This outfit is from that home and probably my favorite!

I love that I can wear a 30s or 40s dress that is slightly too big and it still looks okay. Now that I have my pin curls and rag curls down, I have been more likely to trade my 50s frocks for something a little older. But don't worry, I can never give up the 50s! The other thing you may notice is my lack of red lipstick. I thought this look needs something softer, so I opted for just a little balm on the lips free pf color. It was quite freeing, however a little strange to look in the mirror and not see red lips!

I have never really been into the Holidays. I love Fall and the warmth of Thanksgiving & Winter and the glimmering Christmas lights and of course snow. I think I love the time of year more than the actual celebrations.

Valentine's Day is a holiday that I don't get the fuss. I do however like the child like version of Valentine's, the candy hearts, be mine valentine's, and the red and pink everywhere! I like the sweetness of it all. Unfortunately, most do not appreciate the simple meaning of love. They often think presents, presents, presents or I have to have a date! Whether it's stressing over gifts to give or pressuring one with what they should get you. Missing all the childlike fun that could be had. For me, when I am in a relationship around this time of year, I don't do the gift thing or the pressure of doing it up all big. Instead, the day should just be full of love and fun! My favorite thing to do is dress up and spend the day and evening with loved ones enjoying the city you live in. Concerts, dancing, and all around silliness:) Even if you're not technically "in love" that shouldn't stop you from having just simple fun with your significant other or loved ones. Step back, take the pressure off and just enjoy the happiness that fills the air this time of year.

Hollywood Blondes

My hair has been every color of the rainbow. Dark red, bright red, purple, blueish black, highlighted, low lighted, dark blonde, ash blonde, you name it, I've had it. 3 years ago I went platinum and I don't know, it just felt right. I'm naturally blonde, but it's that yucky blah blonde. As I get older, the darker it becomes. So pale blonde just feels fresher to me, brighter and happier:)

These are the classic blondes who inspire me to be a classic blonde without looking cheap.

My personal favorite blonde starlet. She was so talented and so hilarious.

Grace. Not a typical photo usually shown for Grace, but to me it shows her style and elegance so perfectly.

A week ago I had Sunday brunch with my good friend Andrea from Blonde Bedhead. Before we left she asked if she could take a few photos for an outfit post on her blog. I first had the pleasure of meeting Andrea at last Spring's Randolph Modern Vintage Market while I was at my Dethrose Vintage booth. Ever since I have gotten the pleasure of getting to know her, she was one of the girls I went to Nashville with this past New Years, we soon realized how much we have in common. Gettin' Hitched - The Vintage Bazaar

Yep, it's that time again! The Vintage Bazaar is returning yet again for a vintage pop-up shop. The twist? This one has a lovely vintage wedding theme! It's also taking place at one of my favorite venues here in Chicago, The Empty Bottle.

The lovely gals behind the Bazaar, Katherine & Libby, asked me to answer a few questions about my love affair with vintage. Nashville Bound!!

I was lucky enough to have the chance to spend NYE in Nashville TN with 2 of my favorite Chicago gals, Andrea from Blonde Bedhead & Merl from Clyde's Rebirth & MO Vintage. I knew it was going to be a blast, even if was only for a day. That Friday morning we decided to leave at 7am and of course not only was it pouring down rain it was freezing cold! Actually, I was quite relieved to say goodbye to Chicago and hello warm and sunny Nashville:)

It was a 8 hour trip, which normally would drag and I would dread making but with these 2, it was non stop laughter and time flew! It was seriously ridiculous how much fun we were having trapped in this small space for what turned out to be 10 hours!! Yeah, we made quite a few stops and enjoyed ourselves a bit not rushing.

Following after my mother, I literally have a giant knot in my stomach if I am not driving. It honestly calms my nerves, give me good music and good peeps to keep me company and I will drive for hours!

Before we knew it, we were in Tennessee!

What was first on the list? Where do go out?! Luckily we had the lovely Chandra to put us up for the weekend and to direct us around:) Oh and braid my hair, hahaha! Seriously though, Chandra is a fantastic hairstylist, look her up if you're in Nashville!

Drinks a dancing led to an amazing first night in Nashville. The funny thing is, we got crazier that night than we did for New Years!

The next morning we awoke pretty early, despite being out til 3, to explore Nashville. First up coffee and brunch. Then onto vintage shopping:)

I was ecstatic because I was finally meeting Quincy from Q's Daydream. She recommended some great vintage shopping and this little coffee shop. It was so great to finally meet in person! I just wish we all would have had more time to hang out.

It's funny how much you feel like ya kinda know someone from their blog. So of course we bonded over fashion, vintage and duh, lots of laughing!

First stop, Katy K's for vintage and all your cowgirl needs:)

Of course, we couldn't keep it together very long with breaking out in laughing our butts off! About what? Couldn't tell ya, it happens all too frequently!

The next few hours were spent walking around Nashville and trying on lots of vintage! I hope to visit Quincy again soon, our time meeting was far too short!

On a whim, Andrea decided to get her first tattoo here! I was so happy for her. I know how awesome it feels to get your first:)

After the tattoo session, it was onto dinner then a quick nap before going out to ring in the New Year.

Ok, so we weren't really napping but we did try! Guess what kept us up??? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Jokes, jokes, jokes. :)

Me being the stressed space cadet as per usual, I left Chicago without my garment bag of beautiful vintage dresses to wear for the New Year. Luckily after playing dress up, Andrea had this little blue number that she was kind enough to let me borrow:)

A happy New Year it was, chill and just fun with the gals:)

So that was the trip in a nutshell. A lot of fun and I really can't wait to go back. Nashville is an amazing town and *ahem* the most attractive fellas I have ever seen in one place! I hope to be there again very soon!

New Year ~ New Update

I hope all of you had a happy and safe New Year! I spent mine unexpectedly in Nashville Tennessee with friends. Andrea from Blonde Bedhead and Merl from Clydes Rebirth & Mo Vintage, had invited me to take a road-trip down south with them. No particular reason, just a quick warm adventure outside of our blustery cold winter here in Chicago. It was such a great trip and it was amazing how much I fell in love with Nashville in 24 hours. I will be posting more about our trip and photos later this week:) Including a lovely meet up with Quincy from Q's Daydream! Who might I say is even more lovely in person!

More of that later, let's get on to the Dethrose Vintage shop update! I decided that I haven't been adding enough accessories as of lately, so I thought since I have about 50 purses and 100 shoes in the shop, it's time to get them online. So here is just a few for now but much more to come!

A Very Buberry Christmas...

If Santa was real, all of these things from the Burberry Prorsum Pre-Fall 2012 collection would be under my tree tomorrow morning. I seriously love everything! The best thing about it, I am pretty sure I can recreate some of these looks with my vintage collections:)

Rag Time

When I do my hair usually, I wash it at night and pin curl it or braid it for waves to brush out in the morning setting it with the curling iron. I decided I was bored with this routine and wanted to try something easier. I've tried rag curls before but I had been tying the rags lower resulting into "meh" curls. I tried again only rolling the hair to about ear level while my hair was damp. Woke up this morning and voila! the curls I have been dying to have!

What do ya think?

I seriously have never felt so glamorous before! And it's so easy! Took all of 5 minutes to do!

1940's Take Me to the Market Day Dress // 25 Waist

About a year ago while I was visiting back home, I stopped in my favorite little thrift shop and found this little book. "Sewing Skills"...I kinda just put it with the stack of all my other vintage books and forgot about it until now. While looking through it, I realized how helpful it is! My mom is giving me her old sewing machine, so I think come 2012 I will be putting this book into some good use!

I honestly love all the illustrations, new sewing books seem so boring comparatively.

My 2 favorite things I am definitely going to try:)

Now I just have to go out and find some cute fabric:)

Here is something that has to do with nothing. Everyone who knows me knows my celebrity obsession with Jimmy Fallon. He is my perfect man, seriously, no joke. Anyway, he hosted SNL this past weekend and it was too funny! Here is my fav sketch. I just think everyone may need a good chuckle to forget all our Holiday stresses:)

Recently one of my friends had asked me if I'd ever seen the 1937 film Stage Door. I shamefully admitted that I had not. I always meant to watch it, it just kept slipping my mind to do so. Without seeing it, I bought it. While reading the synopsis and seeing the cast line up, I knew I would love it. I am head over heels in love with everything about this movie. The costume, the hair, the story, everything! Ginger Rogers is my personal fav, Lucille Ball before the comedic red head Hollywood made her become, Katharine Hepburn chic as always and a 14 year old Ann Miller dancing partner to Ginger's character.

The story is about a boarding house for theatrical ladies in training. The competition, friendships and sex, yes it's 1937 and sex plays a huge part of actresses trying to get a part or a free meal. While watching it, you really forget that you're watching a film that took place over 70 years ago. Well, other than the fabulous clothing and hair!

I want everything on Ginger in this film. Her wavy platinum locks to every article of clothing she wears.

The scene below is one of my favorite outfits that Ginger wears! A little 30's playsuit, too cute!!!

Winter Pop

This month is the year anniversary of making Dethrose Vintage a full-time endeavor. It was a super scary transition and had talked myself out of doing it several times. I always had a full-time salary job over the past 10 years. Sure, I had positions I enjoyed doing but there was always something missing and routine set it. I became way too comfortable having a "career" I only felt so so about. So I finally turned down a great promotion and transfer at my last job that would have landed me in Sunny California. I declined and said it's now or never, I jumped and took the risk of becoming a proprietress of Dethrose Vintage:)

Of course there are added pressures and you work extra hard at keeping it all a float but the payoff is huge. Last weekend and this weekend have been great example of that payoff. Doing what I love and being surrounded by the awesome people who love it just as much, to an obsessive degree:) Not only do I focus on my website but I do about 3 pop-up shops a month here in Chicago. The pop-up shops are what keep me going. Running around finding awesome things for the shop and then meeting the shoppers and putting together outfits. Meeting other vendors, sharing stories of the hunt, crazy hoarder estates and exchanging tips for buying, cleaning, etc...

This weekend we're all in Highwood, IL throwing a Holiday Pop-Up! One of my fav gals, Jen from JenStyle Chic Vintage and I decided to share a booth. I have to say our booth sounds like a slumber party with all the laughing, Jen & I have very, ahem, enthusiastic laughs:)

Our room is a little tight to take large photos but here is a taste of the display.

The Sweetest Surprise

This weekend was the Vintage Heaven monthly sale. This is one of the pop-up shops I never miss. In fact, I have only missed one sale in the 3 years I have been participating. I honestly look forward to every one of these sales, not just to sell but to hang out with some of my dearest friends I have met doing the sales. Each month, I constantly meet fantastic new customers and amazingly talented vendors. Mary Miller is one of these talented people I met last spring. She is a fabulous artist and her elegant illustrations are just simply stunning! I have purchased these in the past, framing one for myself and giving others as wonderful gifts.

Today, Mary surprised me with an illustration. I was on a flyer for last months sale and Mary did this illustration of it. I was blown away! It was so flattering, I don't think I could have thanked her enough:) Seriously, the best gift I have gotten in a long while. Thank you Mary for you talent!

Black Friday...yeesh!

The Holidays are here already?!?! Don't get me wrong, I love this time of year, I mean I love it to a crazy point. I smile a lot more often this time of year. I think it's all the lights, snow and my favorite movies being replayed over and over. Also, I love getting together with friends and family!! I have already baked Blueberry Pecan Bread, Pumpkin Spice Muffins and a vat of Butternut Squash Soup...all gluten free of course:) And believe it or not, I enjoy finding little gifties for people:)
